You Don't Need Bluetooth In Your Luggage

How Bluesmart's connected luggage nearly got me kicked off a flight. Note to self. You don't need Bluetooth connected luggage. This intrepid traveler found that out while testing a new carry on with sensors and a battery. Airport inspectors not knowledgeable about the Internet of Things could easily misinterpret the purpose of a carry on with wires leading to a battery. In fact, any bag that can be controlled by a Smartphone via Bluetooth could be a risk. What does the bag do? It weighs itself, charges your phone, and has a built in GPS style location tracker. The drop in side pocket for a computer and peripherals is nice; but, you don't want to be the traveler the Stormtroopers are looking for, do you?

Motorola DynaTAC 8000X - My First Cell Phone

Motorola DynaTAC 8000X. The DynaTAC was my first cell phone. I got in in the late Eighties, when the price had come down under $1,000. Initially, they were over $3,000. The networks were so bad that you had to walk around outside to get a signal. But, it was cool to have one, and, even then, I loved gadgets. All it did was make phone calls, and it didn't even do that well. Back then you could get a kit in your car that would charge the thing while you were driving. It was huge, and we called them "car phones" back then. Motorola was the king of cellular. I moved on to smaller flip phones; but, this one was my first.

HP Spectre x360 - FutureLawyer Gets A New Computer

HP Spectre x360 review - CNET. I recently bought new computers for SWMBO and She Who Someday Will Be Obeyed. Then, my trusty little Sony Tablet started showing signs of age, and I ran out of room on the SSD drive. So, it was fortunate that I found the HP Spectre on sale at Best Buy. A Core i7 processor, 8 GB of RAM, a 256 GB SSD drive, and an ultrabook convertible metal exterior. It is only a couple of hundred dollars more than I paid for my little tablet 2 years ago. Quite the bargain. I will be reporting on the setup process over the weekend. Anyone else sporting a new computer?

CleanMaster For Android - You Don't Need It

The most used Android app in Q4 2015 left phones feeling clean. It is a seductive thing, the app cleaning software market. We all want our phones to be "optimized" and "clean" and smooth running. So, we install apps like CleanMaster, and "clean" our phones of all that detritus that Android leaves lying around. I admit it. Before I knew better, I was taken in by the appeal. I am always tweaking my tech, and it was too tempting to pass up. But, I learned, and I now know better. You don't need CleanMaster, or any other similar program. Google does a great job of keeping Android running, no matter what you put it through. Relax. If you really want to do something useful, get rid of the 9,000 emails sitting in your In Box. In Box Zero doesn't cost anything, and you really will have  a clean phone.

Zip Files, Unzip Files, Compress Files and Share Files with WinZip. WinZip is one of those essential utilities that no lawyer can do without. We share multitudes of files, and many files are shared with us. In a partially real estate related practice, I receive packages of documents in real estate foreclosures all the time. They come in zipped format, which means all the files are grouped into one zip file, making it easy to move around. Now, WinZip 20 moves beyond compression, zipping, and decompression and unzipping, and contains utilities for conversion of just about any file format, encryption, sharing large files, and file management. If you can think of something you need to do with a file or files, WinZip 20 can handle it. It is a bargain at $49.95; but, since I had a previous version, I upgraded for $14.95. If you are running a licensed version, look for the upgrade email. Essential files and essential software.

Computer, Keyboard And Mouse In Your Shirt Pocket

I have been playing with the new Chromebit computer, which is a tiny marvel, and which runs on Chrome OS. However, a full sized keyboard seemed overkill, and the idea is to have a full computer you could carry in a shirt pocket. Any place, like a hotel room, with a TV or monitor with an HDMI input makes this a real carry around little computer. This Chinese hand sized wireless keyboard is perfect. It has a full tiny keyboard with a trackpad, and connects to the Chromebit with a USB 2.4 Ghz dongle. Here are photos of the Chromebit, keyboard and monitor running Chrome OS. Very cool. 

Challenger Disaster - January 28, 1986

Challenger Disaster (Standard 4:3) : NASA : Free Download & Streaming : Internet Archive. Thirty years ago today, 7 brave souls climbed into the Space Shuttle Challenger for the 25th Shuttle launch, with high hopes, and during a time when such launches were still a very big deal. I was a young lawyer with a brand new Satellite dish tuned to the NASA feed, and a VCR that was recording for hours. I still remember the chilling words of the NASA announcer: "Obviously we have a major malfunction". Michael J. Smith, Dick Scobee, Ronald McNair, Ellison Onizuka, Christa McAuliffe, Gregory Jarvis, and Judith Resnik. May they rest in peace.
