Turn on automatic patches, and use MalWare Bytes to proactively spot exploits. Use two factor authentication when available, and never click on links in emails that you don't check first. You can never be "safe" out there. But, you can be "safer" than you are now. Make your house the one on the street with the most locks, and the typical criminal will go for the easy target.
