Solo/Small Firm Survey: How Lawyers Spend Their Time and the Money They Make - @ComplexD | @ComplexD. This compilation of statistics concerning how lawyers spend their time performing various tasks is a prime reason why I am a Solo. First, these kinds of surveys are flawed, in that they compute their results based upon responses from the lawyers themselves. I am not even sure I would try to figure out how much time I spend performing these tasks. I just practice law. I do what has to be done, when it has to be done, and try to enjoy myself in the process. While this survey doesn't pretend to come to any conclusions, it is clear that big law lawyers make a lot more money than solos. To which I say, so what? I wonder whether that money will follow them into the next life. Sure, a lot of money is nice; but, it doesn't ever replace what is really important. How much time do I spend doing stuff I enjoy, like listening to music, working on computers, playing golf, reading non legal books, newspapers and magazines, going to Disney World, playing with the parrots, and other things? I don't know; but, I do it as much as I can. So, fellow lawyers, spend more of your time living, and less compiling useless statistics. You will be happier.
