If You Really Want To Open The Legal Marketplace, Let Solo And Small Firm Lawyers Compete | Above the Law. Carolyn Elefant tells it like it is. You go girl. This piece is a virtual laundry list of the hypocrisy of law practice regulation. The bigger law firms don't have many of these problems, because of the economies of scale. Yet, they pontificate about providing access to the law to everyone. The solution, according to some of them? Allow non lawyers to provide legal services, and companies like LegalZoom to provide one size fits all cheap services online. Well, as long as I take breath, I will minister to the ordinary people of this world, trying to navigate an ever more complicated legal system. I will level their playing field, and I don't care if I make a lot of money, as long as my basic needs and the needs of my family are met. Do you want to make legal services available to the masses? Allow solo and small firm practitioners to do what we do. There is no substitute for the one on one counseling services provided by a single lawyer. It is about so much more than law. It bridges the gap between human beings in conflict or worrisome problems. It navigates the various problems that arrive in every stage of our lives. No website, or BigLaw committee, or big corporation will ever do that job.
