If you want to save data usage on your Smartphone, one way is to use WiFi wherever possible. However, many free public WiFi hotspots are unsecured and dangerous. Now, Google has identified thousands of them around the country and is making its WiFi Assistant software available to all users of Google phones. The software uses free and available hotspots; but, secures data going through them. The Assistant has previously only been available to Google Project Fi users. This should greatly reduce data usage on Google phones. The phone carriers had better wake up and smell the competition. Google is taking no prisoners.
