Execupundit.com: Stoics and More Stoics. Fellow Stoic, and all around wise man, Michael Wade, posts about the renewal of Stoicism in the blogging world. It occurs to me that law is a profession well suited to the Stoic world view. In fact, lawyers are trained to deal dispassionately with the problems that naturally occur in life and death, being well suited, in mind and temperament, to suppress emotions where they interfere with a resolution of problems. However, lawyers and everyone need to recognize that some problems are not going away, and we have to accept them as the will of someone greater than ourselves. Always remember not to desire anything we don't have; but, desire only what we already have. And, always be prepared to lose it at any moment. Some Stoics carry a medallion that says: "Memento Mori". Remember that we all die, and it can occur in the next moment. Carrying the coin can remind us of that as we carry ourselves through life; especially, on a rainy, dreary Monday morning. I used to hate Mondays. I don't anymore, because I realize how lucky I am to get one more. I don't need to carry a coin to remind me; but, all of us need to remember, every day. Memento Mori.
