Is Minority Report Part Of Our Real Future?

The Impenetrable Program Transforming How Courts Treat DNA Evidence | WIRED. In the movie, Minority Report, advanced science and technology is used to predict crimes before they happen, so that the police can arrest a suspect before he commits the crime. Far fetched; but, modern technology is now available that can solve crimes using evidence that is invisible to the human eye, and uses computer algorithms that are not able to be tested or examined by anyone but the creator. Is a criminal defendant entitled to know how a tool works; especially, when the tool is used to convict him? The courts are wrestling with the issue, and the competing interests are compelling on both sides of the argument. In the meantime, the risks of misuse of technology have to be measured against the good it can do. Stay tuned.

Start10 : Software from Stardock.I never could get used to the Windows 10 (and Windows 8) tile based interface. I was used to a menu based drop down choice list to access programs and files. Just click the Start button, and all your apps are visible in a hierarchical list. So, I paid Five bucks for a little program called Start 8, and haven't looked back. Start10 continues the journey, giving a Windows 7 like interface to Windows 10. Don't like tiles? You can get this little program for under Five bucks, and never look back. 

Battery Dying? Samsung To The Rescue

New Samsung battery tech could lead to 45% increased capacity and 5x faster charging.I am always concerned about phone battery life. I favor my LG V20 because it has a removable back case and the ability to swap batteries. I even have purchased several extra batteries, just in case. Whenever I know that I am going to be running around until late night, I carry an extra with me. Since I put my phones on the charger every night (it has become a ritual to plug in all my devices at night), I almost never run out of charge. However, new Samsung tech promises to extend battery life 50%, which would be fine for anyone who is disciplined enough to charge every night. Samsung already has a superior SmartWatch, and my Gear S3 will go a couple of days without a charge. I charge it at night anyway; but, I could go away for a weekend without charging it. If Samsung gets this done, I might even pay their obscene amounts for one of their phones again. 

Great Writers And Their Typewriters

Bryan Garner put this image up on Twitter, and it is great. There is an Exhibit at the Airport in San Francisco which shows the typewriters of famous writers. Hemingway, Welles, Williams, and Lennon are represented. Most of us who fancy ourselves writers these days type our screeds on computer keyboards. I used a Smith Corona portable in College, and it still sits next to my desk in its case, just in case Armageddon comes and there is no power. Of course, I still need to buy a cache of ribbons and fresh paper. There is no feeling like placing a fresh sheet of white paper into a typewriter, and scrolling it to the first line. I still use mechanical keyboards to emulate the satisfying click, click, click as the keys are punched. Tactile Nirvana. Old School. Write on.

Google Express. Online shopping is about to get some competition. Google has entered the fray with Google Express, which allows the user to shop at any of many stores online. While it still isn't as comprehensive as Amazon, Google isn't known for doing things halfway; and, the destination is certain to be popular with shoppers who want to shop at a particular store. You can shop at Costco without being a member, and home delivery is available everywhere. We are rapidly getting to a world in which you don't have to drive anywhere to get anything you want delivered to you. Let's hope we don't become isolated pods of consumers that never leave our homes. If you are homebound, however, this type of experience will bring the world to you, and that is a good thing.
