8 big announcements from Google I/O 2018 | TechCrunch. Google Research is no more. It is now called Google AI. I am usually down on big corporations and their fascination with logos and names. But, in this case, I support Google's renaming. The next century or two will be all about Artificial Intelligence, however you define it. Our machines will become more human like, and humans will become more machine like. Whether this is a good or bad thing I will leave to the historians and philosophers. I am sanguine enough about the future to realize that it is inevitable. My time is better spent on the present. And, today, I am excited about the future of computing. Pretty soon, I will be able to ask Google to perform a task, and my devices will pick up the phone (figuratively speaking) and conduct a conversation with the human or robot they need to get the task done. We want our machines to have actual human conversations with other machines and other humans. Why? I have no clue. But, like the guy at the top of the mountain, why do it? Because it is there, grasshopper. Like vinyl records, I suspect that, in the future, there will be a retro movement by humans to actually pick up telephones and make phone calls. Making your own phone calls. Rad.
