The First Cellphone Went on Sale 30 Years Ago for $4,000. In the early 80s, mobile telephones were called carphones, because they couldn't be carried around without a large briefcase. They were corded devices tied to a battery pack, and had antennas the size of large pens. Then, the Motorola DynaTac appeared, and, for $3,995, you could carry around a huge phone the size of a brick, and make phone calls. The price came down after a while, and I remember trying to make a call with one of these at a Convention. Thinking back, it was one of the first wearable communication devices; even if it wouldn't fit into a pocket. It was hit or miss with phone calls, and I have had dozens of mobile devices since. What was your first cellphone?
