mike rowe's commencement address. Cultural Offering highlights one of my favorite people today, Mike Rowe, whose Dirty Jobs TV show was a favorite of mine. My dad taught me early on not to fear getting dirty, and doing a job right the first time. While I applied those lessons to law school, I assure you that no one will be calling me to fix their air conditioning in the summer. Having suffered from this disaster myself, and sweltering in a 90 degree bedroom for several nights, I can assure you that a competent hard working AC tech was the most important person in my life at that moment. I realize that no AC is a first world problem; but, when we are preparing our kids for real life, I don't think hundreds of thousands of dollars in debt to send the to a school that has "safe zones" to protect them from different ideas and speech is a wise choice. If ever the importance of skilled tradesmen and workers was more on display, it has been during this pandemic. When I was lying in my living room having a heart attack 6 years ago, hiring a lawyer or a corporate executive or a politician was the last thing on my mind. This commencement address directed to graduates of Mike Rowe Works, which provides scholarships to young people to learn trades, is important, brilliant, and moving.
