If there were ever a time for us to become aware of Stoic philosophy, it is now. Everything that is happening now, from pandemic to political upheaval to rioting in the streets, has happened before; and, if the world continues, will happen again. The Stoic idea embodied in the Latin phrase, Memento Mori, acknowledges that death is the only certainty. What we do now, each of us, is the only thing we control. What better time to remind ourselves that today is it, than a time when all around us seems to be falling apart? It is easy to live in the promise of the future, or wallow in the pain of the past. It is harder to know that those things can only harm our moments. Remember, you will die. You don't know when, or how. So, for today, don't cower in utter fear in some corner, somewhere. Breathe, eat, pray, love, wonder, exist, help, sleep, and perhaps fate will give you another day to do it again. Oh, I am adding to my pandemic mask collection. What to wear? What to wear?
