A Tale Of Two Tablets. I Want Both.

Well, I have spent several weeks now with my new Boox Note Air, and, while the software is sluggish, and it has its quirks when used as a layered EInk note taking device, it has replaced the Remarkable, and I use it for my daily calendar and note taking. No paper still. However, while it runs Android, and can download and use many PlayStore Android apps, I prefer my venerable Samsung Tab S5e for video viewing, and games, and Ereading. The color screen really makes my reading of the daily paper, and NFL highlights on the NFL channel, and most other viewing specific apps much nicer. So, it looks like I will be carrying two tablets with me. They each have their benefits. The Tablet has its own LTE chip, so it connects to the Internet anywhere, and I can use it as a Mobile Hotspot for the Note Air. I can even use the Hotspot for mobile notebook computer use for my Microsoft Book 2, and the TVs in the RV. In a pinch, I can still use the Note Air for Android apps; or, I can access two Android apps at once...one on the Note Air, and the other on the Samsung tablet.

Law practice is stressful enough. What a drag it must be to have so many co-workers, some of whom will clearly be on the low end of the sanity spectrum. It is certainly enough that we meet clients, and Judges and other lawyers who challenge our faith in humanity on a regular basis. Solo practice gives us a respite from the chaos and insanity that exists outside. There is also the distinct possibility that, in a large practice, the nutty one would be me.

 

Don't Be A Dinosaur. Get With The Program.

In the early days, before most of you were born, we lawyers were a paper intensive bunch. We spent more on file rooms, and file storage than we did on electricity. We had law libraries filled with books on paper, lined up on wooden shelves in large rooms in which we sat a long wooden tables, surrounded by open books. I still have a conference room surrounded by law books that go back to the founding of Florida in the 1800's. These days, however, all of those paper files and books are obsolete, and most of our data is stored in that fictional place we call the cloud. Are we too dependent on the electrical grid, and server farms in remote locations? Perhaps. But, this is the world we live in. So, get with the program. Learn about file storage and data storage and law office management in the cloud. Otherwise, like the dinosaurs, you may become a fossil someday, being dug up and analyzed by a future generation of law clerks.

It is past time for a backlash against those who are too sensitive to hear offensive or objectionable words (at least, in their opinion). It is past time for all of us to tell the A**** that we don't care if they are offended. What kind of people are we, and what kind of kids are we raising? 

Internet Everywhere - How Fast Is Your Hotspot?

Sluggish Hotspot Made Faster With One Setting. Gone are the days when a mobile lawyer had to find a hotel lobby or airline waiting area or hotel room with a cabled or WiFi Internet connection. No longer are we subject to insecure WiFi hotspots, with spotty reception, or hotels that want an arm and a leg for Internet access. I am old enough to remember crawling under a motel room bed to find the phone jack so that I could connect a dial up modem that could hardly handle a text based email transmission. These days, the biggest problem is learning how to connect your phone to a 5Ghz connection for fast hotspot data. For less than $15 a month, I have several devices (phones and tablets) that can use up to 40 Gigabytes of hotspot data a month, which is enough for all my Internet needs when traveling in the RV, and that includes TV streaming. You don't need Cable TV. You don't need Satellite TV. You don't need to call the front desk about the spotty WiFi. Learn to use your Smartphone Hotspot, and better yet, have a second phone to use as a Hotspot. It is secure. It is easy. Just make sure you configure the Hotspot to the fastest connection you can use, either 2.4Ghz or 5Ghz.

When Chester Gould began Dick Tracy in 1931, it was an homage to Eliot Ness, during a time in which the good guys went after the bad guys, and their exploits were chronicled in the paper based newspapers and comic books. In 1946, Dick acquired a two way wrist radio, which later became the idea for a wrist phone that sent video back and forth. As a young boy, I was fascinated with the wrist communication device, and it sparked the later development of the SmartWatch, using tech developed for Smartphones. 

"On January 13, 1946,^[7] the two-Way Wrist Radio became one of the strip's most immediately recognizable icons, worn as a wristwatch by Tracy and members of the police force. This radio wristwatch inspired Martin Cooper's invention of the mobile phone, and may have inspired later smartwatches.^[8] The two-Way Wrist Radio was upgraded to a two-Way Wrist TV in 1964.^[9] This development also led to the introduction of an important supporting character, Diet Smith, an eccentric industrialist who financed the development of this equipment. In a conspicuous coincidence, the idea of a radio built into a wrist watch played an important role in the story line of "Superman – The Talking Cat" broadcast on the Mutual Broadcasting System on January 9 through 28, 1946 (episodes 878 through 891)."

So, the next time you take a call or text or email on your wrist, you can thank a comic book character. And Dick Tracy.
