Labor Day. Today is Labor Day, another holiday we celebrate to highlight something we value. In this case, it is the American laborer; but, there are all types of labor, and they don't have to be physical. Our society has created all sorts of ways to work that don't involve anything but a functioning brain, and "thinking" for a living has created a need for many to appear to be working, for the benefit of observers. "Looking busy" is one way that workers use to fool, or impress, others. In a knowledge based society, we can labor without "looking busy", and many of us look for ways to get more done with less effort. Technology is a prime way to accomplish that, and many of us are able to work and survive as solos because of it. However, the Stoics tell us that we have to worry less about what others think, and be in the present, making our own decisions and judgments about dealing with life challenges. So, stare at me all you want, as I sit at a computer keyboard, churning out words and sentences. Am I working hard? You'll just have to trust me.
