Audien Atom Pro. If you are of a certain age, you know what I mean. If your spouse is in the other room, yelling "What!" doesn't get a response anymore. In order to communicate, you have to be facing each other at a distance less than 3 feet. All the TVs in the house have closed captioning enabled all the time. Several years ago, I even tried hearing aids, which, even after the old people discount, were over $2,000. Returned them after a week. So, when I saw tiny Audien hearing aids online several weeks ago, at around $100 each, I was skeptical. I was amazed when they actually worked, and I didn't need closed captioning anymore. If you think you need aids, try these. I even bought Diane a pair. I can't wait to try them out in a restaurant or at a football game, where ambient noise has made it difficult to hold a conversation. Well, at least I still have my hair.

I am often greeted with surprise when friends discover my poetry. Most of us have the wrong idea about poetry anyway. It isn't about nursery rhymes that you learned as a child. It is about conveying feeling and emotion with words. The poems in "Life Is Simple, Really" and "Poems For Lovers" attempt to do that. As an example, this poem is called "Photograph". What feeling does it bring to you, if any?

 

PHOTOGRAPH

He looked at the photograph closely,

image of his youth,

filled with promise, and

overflowing with optimism.

In a single dimension,

the photograph reminded him

of another self,

free to hope,

free to wonder,

free to grasp, and

looking for the future.

He remembered the photographer,

prodding,

annoying,

motioning, and

jostling with the hangers on

and the wannabes.

Sharing his soul,

whether he wanted to or not.

He took a picture in his mind,

moved to another decade,

and

wondered whether the wisdom

of age

would be enough

to bring the photograph back to life.

Did it look back at him

and laugh?

Cyber Monday At Best Buy. Is it just me, or do Black Friday and Cyber Monday lack the excitement they once had? In a world in which we are doing most of our shopping online, and retailers are discounting products year round, it seems anti-climactic to check out electronics deals today. But, then again, you can still find some pretty steep discounts. Just don't buy something just to buy it. Make sure you were going to buy it anyway.
