He remembered being a kid,
excited about Christmas,
and wanting a Schwinn bicycle.
He wanted to go anywhere,
and had no destination.
He just wanted to travel around,
free.
He grew older,
and his yen to travel
moved to cars
and other ways to get away.
He spent time on airplanes,
traveling to look for happiness
in other places,
anywhere but where he found himself
at Christmas.
He remembered an early Christmas,
when his wish
settled on a reel to reel tape recorder.
He could travel in his mind,
lost in music,
and be anywhere else but where he was.
He wanted to be present,
but away.
Here, and there.
Then, in a flash,
he found himself
in a room,
with a companion.
Her hair was soft and beautiful.
Her smile cast a bright shadow
over him.
He was old;
but, he realized that this year’s gift
took human form.
How could he travel
everywhere,
with a relentlessly happy,
smiling,
joyous
woman
who made him realize
that he didn’t want
to go anywhere
anymore.
