A Three Day Lawyer Work Week. Just kidding. One of the two edged swords of remote work for lawyers is that you are a practicing lawyer 24-7. The trend is towards lawyers, even in BigLaw, working remotely, at home or elsewhere. Personally, I love the freedom of solo practice, with technology allowing me to work wherever I am, and whenever I want. Some BigLaw firms, however, are talking about keeping the "firm culture" and the ability to monitor attorneys by requiring their physical presence back at the office. As this article points out, though, some "firm culture" should be thrown out:
"Frankly, a lot of law firm culture is terrible and ought to be done away with anyway. As a U.K lawyer was quoted as saying in a recent Law.Com article, “Law firm culture meaning long hours, presenteeism, lack of flexibility, hierarchy, micromanagement, targets based on hours worked rather than results, treating staff like children? In that case, yes, working from home is eroding law firm culture, and it’s about time.”
So, whichever side of this argument you are on, solo practice gives you the freedom and flexibility to choose. Isn't that what a happy life is supposed to be about?
