Happy New Year.

As we move into another year, we should all give thanks that we get to usher in another one. We experienced tragedy, triumph, banal ordinary days, and fitful nights. We were not in control of events; but we survived. Just say thanks to whatever higher power you believe in, and move on through. The journey is magnificent, if you allow it. You get to control the clock. You set the hands. Make it pass slowly.

New Year’s Resolution.

The wall clock in the office
moved like a New Year’s Resolution.
It began its journey
with measured steps,
and the long thin arms
moved steadily around the fulcrum,
ticking and tocking
with a regular rhythm.
He moved into the last day of the year,
and let nature take its course.
As time passed,
the arms of the clock
slowed.
He felt an imperceptible movement
of gears,
grinding in a slow rhythm.

He resolved to let the time pass.

Whatever he did,

he would rely on the tardy clock
for an important task,
and time would have passed him by.

His New Year’s Resolution
was too slow
to follow him into the future.
He would need to make
a new one.

But, was a resolution the answer?

Should he instead,
in a burst of inspiration,
just go out and buy a new clock?

 

 

How FutureLawyer Spends Saturday Mornings.

One of the things a tech person needs to do is to use and evaluate new tech. This creates the need to keep that tech up to date. I also have to install software on new tech. There is no end to it. It is a good thing I like playing with tech. This is my home office this morning. I work in a converted garage (now it is called the den) so excuse the messiness. I always have said that a messy office is a sign of an organized mind. That is my story and I am sticking to it. In the photo, far left, is my original Amazon Home Echo Show. There are new versions; but it works fine. Next is a new 10 inch tablet, Chinese version, that I am testing and installing software. In the center is my big screen monitor, on top of my Laser printer and keyboard, with my Samsung Book 3 360 2 in 1 notebook computer. In the very center, I have temporarily placed my Kindle Scribe, which I use daily for all note taking, and which contains my 1,000 book library. To the right is my ScanSnap scanner in the rear, and my best tablet, a Samsung Tab S7e, on which I am currently watching the new episode of the Oak Island Mystery. Treasure hunting combined with TV nonsense is like a drug. Can't stop watching. Will they ever find the damn treasure? Want to grow old? Keep your mind active. Want to keep your mind active? Try keeping a few dozen gadgets up to date.

Samsung Phone App Released For Windows. One of the cool things about having all Samsung devices is that they work so well together. Now, with the new Samsung Phone app, I can take calls on the notebook computer, and see notifications without having the phone in my hand. With the availability of the Watch 5 Smartwatch, I have 3 devices working together to make my computing life easier.

It's Winter In Florida. Get Out The Sweaters.

When the temperature dips below 70 degrees here, it is time to bundle up. We have a notice system set up in the front yard. When the Snowman shivers, it is Winter.

Approaching A New Year - Same Rules As Last Year.

As a New Year approaches, it is important not to give its possibilities too much importance. Each of us has experienced the gamut of emotions this past year. Some of us have spent time in pain. Some of us have had moments of joy and happiness. Events are inevitable. How we react to them is a choice. If you are having a wonderful holiday, that is great. But, always remember that pain is a day away. Death is an inevitability. Enjoy good fortune while you have it; but, never expect it to continue forever. If you are in pain today, always remember that it doesn't last forever. Always know that joy is where you seek it. This week can be a time to reflect on the cycles of life. Sometimes, they are a roller coaster. But, for every high there is a low. Maintain a joyful outlook, no matter where your cycle is today.

He caressed her alabaster skin,

attempting to wipe away the pain of her past.

He remembered his own pain.

It invaded the world of passion and love,

and moved freely

inside the hearts of lovers.

Like a microbe,

it travelled through the blood vessels

mingling with good cells and bad.

Pain grew like a cancer,

uncontrollable and spreading everywhere.

Was his love the antidote?

Would it heal breaking heart?

Would it bring a clean, fresh face in the morning?

He wanted to tell her

that tomorrow would bring freedom from pain.

He wanted to tell her that tomorrow would be a good day

to begin the rest of their lives.

He only spoke of his love for her,

kissed her,

and wiped the tears away.

The New York Times Microsoft Litigation Will Likely End In Settlement. Kevin O'Keefe is a keen observer of tech trends, and I agree with his conclusion that the risks are too great for Content Creators and Generative AI not to reach some monetary settlement. AI is too important a tech advancement to allow it to be hampered by lack of access to the world's content and knowledge. The Times' and other content creators work product should not be used for profit by others. Such use is way out of line with the concept of "fair use". This is different than the first years after the invention of search engines like Google. It is the culmination of the application of human knowledge to our problems. Settle quickly, grasshoppers. The world wants and needs AI.
