I don't want to retire. But, I want the freedom not to work, if that makes sense. The release of the RV Lawyer book has me thinking about my choices lately. Using the technology to control where I am when I work helps a great deal. So, if I wake up and don't want to get dressed, get in the car, and drive to the office, I don't have to. But, I can still work at my fully decked out home office, if I want to for a few hours. If I go to the office, I can work at my desk with all the same peripherals, or, if we are traveling in the RV, I have the same peripherals inside the RV. So, this gives me the freedom to work, or not, wherever I happen to be at a given time. In addition to supplementing my income, which I need because I have never concentrated on putting money away, I keep my mind active when I want it to be. Fortunately, the advances in technology over the decades have created ideal conditions for mobile professionals. My fascination with tech has given me much fun over the years, in that I have always tried to figure out ways to be productive wherever I am. I sent emails on a pay phone in Yosemite National Park once. I have sent documents and emails from the floor of a Las Vegas hotel during a tech convention, and I have done work in countless hotel rooms, and convention centers over the years. I have taken mobile phone calls in hotels when mobile phones were huge bricks, and have crawled under hotel beds looking for a phone jack to plug a modem into. The moral of this story is that life and work isn't about the place or the tools. It is about the journey. Have fun doing it.
