They required me to join the Army.
I did it,
so that I could stay in school
and write poetry.
They told me I was not an athlete.
I decided to exercise my mind.
They told me not to go to law school.
I did it anyway.
They told me I was too yourng
to be married.

They told me to join a big law firm.
I opened an office by myself.
They criticized my choice to be a solo.
You won’t make a lot of money, they said.

No Joke. Coffee Is Good For You.

Coffee Associated With Reduced Risk Of Stroke And Dementia. I have jokingly referred to my coffee addiction in the past; but today I am being totally serious. New studies have shown that moderate coffee drinking (2 to 3 cups a day), which is my typical consumption, reduces the risk of death in persons with heart comorbidities. As you know, I have CM, with a triple bypass in 2015. But, my greatest fear is not dying of a heart attack. That is probably pre-ordained, and I am, after all, 76 years old. My greatest fear is dementia, and the corresponding loss of a connection to reality, and the inability to think and write. Dementia is the plague of our society, and it is the cruelest disease of all. So, this study, which seems to indicate a correlation between coffee drinking and a reduction in dementia risk, is heartening. My deteriorating body is something I can deal with. The loss of my mind would be beyond terrible. Any other coffee drinkers out there? May your coffee kick in today before reality.

Both interpretations of this sign are concerning. If a restaurant has to advertise that it doesn't cook and eat small animals, I might think twice before eating there. And, any restaurant that thinks people might think it "feeds" small animals is not going to be on my list for date night. And, if you are eating worms, or feeding them, you better be using them as bait. Thank God the sign has Thai writing on it. Otherwise, I might think I was in Ohio.

I am no longer surprised by the speedy advances in intelligent computers; but, trust me, the advanced voice mode will blow you away. Having a natural conversation with your computer friend, which responds so human like that you can suspend your disbelief and think you are talking with a person, is mind blowing. There are multiple voices from which to choose, and you can use memory and custom instructions to shape the responses. Audio recordings are saved, and you can revisit them whenever you like. In the old days, if I were stumped about something, I might call a friend or colleague, and ask them for help. But, they are humans also, and Chat GPT is like talking to millions of human friends simultaneously. Of course, all advice from someone else needs to be taken as another opinion. But, it certainly speeds up the research process, and, often, the answer is clear. Update your Chat GPT, click on the sound bar icon in the lower right, and start traveling everywhere with the smartest computer friend you ever had. I am using the new 01-mini engine, which is much faster than 4o, and has much improved reasoning skills.

He was a serious man.

His days were spent,

brow furrowed,

arguing about serious things.

He was never idle,

and didn’t tolerate those who were.

His time was spent

arguing about serious topics,

and thinking about serious things.

He made lists of things that needed doing.

He attacked them with dedication

and resolve.

No one could say that he was derelict

in fulfilling the duties assigned to him.

He had no time for fun.

Life was too serious for that.

He demanded that everyone

treat life as seriously as he.

He avoided those who frolicked,

and spent time in useless inaction.

He would not waste his life

that way.

We all knew that he was a serious man,

not to be trifled with.

He got things done.

He never blinked.

He never swore.

He never was seen

to smile.

Smiling was a waste of time.

Things needed doing.

He was just the man to get them done.

When he died,

no one mourned his loss.

No one came to the funeral.

No one smiled at a memory of him.

But, everyone agreed

that he was a serious man.
