The Future Of Law Practice And Being Human%u2026It%u2019s All About AI %u2013 PRI. When I was asked to write a piece on CES 2018, which is the largest gadget show in the world, and to relate it to the practice of law, it was easy. There is no question that the theme of this year's conference was the Internet of Things and the rise of AI powered devices. As things become smarter, their utility in the practice of law and every other business becomes amplified. This article was the result. There is enough here to satisfy both the practicing lawyers and those who want to replace us. Only the future can tell. 

CES 2018 -Wireless Charging Everywhere! What's Up With That?

Energous WattUp Hands-on: Over-the-Air Wireless Charging Wows. Okay, this tech is very cool. What if you could charge your phone and devices just by walking around the house or office? Energous has introduced a whole house or office wireless charging system called WattUp. It is a transmitter that can be mounted on a wall, inserted in a computer, or put on a desk, and charge devices up to a few feet away, and can be used over a 3,000 square feet house; although, the charge strength diminishes with distance. The early versions will have a 3-6 foot range at power; but, that gives users so-called "rotational" freedom. The device doesn't have to sit on a charger base, like the current Qi wireless systems. It's going to be a brave new world, when all our devices are charging all the time.

Fellow lawyer and gadgeteer, Steve Embry, is attending CES 2018, and is pessimistic about the future of lawyering, given the speed (5G anyone?), and the incorporation of AI into robots, and into just about everything. I don't however, share that pessimism; although, I agree that lawyers will be doing different stuff in different ways in the future. Counseling, decision making, and other human stuff will always be required for the interaction and conflicts humans engage in. The information will be much better and the AI robots and computers will spout information and connections that have authority; but, until the robots take over, humans will stay in control. In any event, Steve, any problem with robots is several generations away, so relax and gadget on.We lawyers are like roaches. We will evolve and survive. We are just made that way. Whom do you think the robot makers will hire to solve their problems?

The Nineties Called - They Are Sending You A New Old Phone

The Gemini phone is a Psion PDA with an Android update - CNET. Seriously? A Psion 5 Gemini from Planet Computers in 2018? A flip-up screen with a real keyboard? Real message and email typing with my thumbs? Yes, this thing is real, and yes, the tech inside permits a dual boot Android/Linux computer system with a 10 core processor, and 64 GB of storage. But, the cool thing is that when it launches, it will cost less than $600 U.S. The keyboard makes it a lot bulkier than modern flagship phones; but, did I mention it has a real keyboard? Awesome.

CES 2018 Las Vegas - January 8-12 - CNET. Want to be in Las Vegas for CES 2018, but can't? The excellent CNET coverage will be the next best thing. I have been in the zoo that is the CES press pool; and, trust me, these people work hard. CNET has a crew that will be roaming the halls, and writing about what they see. You can read it all here, which is exactly what I will be doing. I will offer my take on the stuff that interests me; but, you can read about what interests you. The new TVs and latest laptops and phones, and the quirky side show stuff will all be on display. Of course, you and I won't get to go to the pricey restaurants; but, that will leave us more money to spend on gadgets. Enjoy.
