Maybe Robotic Lawyers With AI Engines Aren't A Bad Idea, After All?

I have written before about my doubts that robotic lawyers will replace lawyers in the future. Person to person contact is important to many attorney-client relationships. Many legal problems have an emotional and human component that can't be duplicated in a robot. Yet. However, I have great confidence that AI will enhance human lawyers' ability to practice law. This is already happening, as search engines, data analysis, and prediction engines are already being used by lawyers. But, what if robots become indistinguishable from humans? What if a human looking robot had the knowledge of every legal principle and every previous case in history? What if these future robots could do our jobs for us? What if the Terminator isn't the only possible future of advanced robotics? Sometimes, I am sad to reach the twilight of a long life. I would like to see if that is a possible future.

(H/T Gyi Tsakalakis) The future of robotics is bright. Combining realistic looking robots with AI technology will spawn a new breed of artificial human. We older humans won't live to see it; but, it is coming, young people. Are you ready?

 

Robots R Us.

The New I Robot. Michael Wade has an interesting take on the advance of robot technology. It ties in to my post about the new virtual reality technology that involves the use of wearable gloves and headgear to imitate the real world. In fact, we need not fear the coming age of super robots that will be stronger, faster and smarter than we are. We need to fear the humans who control them, and the humans who, with enhanced tech, become them. Enhanced humans are going to be dangerous. We will first use them in wars. After that, bad people will use them to do bad things to innocents. Sometime, I am glad that I am old.

Give Me An Army Of These Robotic Dogs And I Will Win Wars.

It is unfortunate that it is sometimes necessary to wage war to protect our freedom. But, the world is what it is. So, I welcome our future weaponized robot dogs; but, I hope they are controlled by responsible adults. Do you feel lucky, punk?

I Don't Think We Have To Worry About The Terminator Anytime Soon.

We Have Seen The AI Robot Overlords, And They Are Us.

Elon Musk Thinks We Are In A Computer Simulation. Are we all living in the Matrix? Are we AI robots living in a computer simulation created and controlled by aliens or some superior species? Or, are we being controlled by future versions of our own species? Elon Musk thinks it is almost a certainty. Rapid advances in technology over the past few years create the possibility that, someday, we will be unable to distinguish between virtual reality and what we call reality now. Consider that it isn't really any less rational to believe in a Matrix type simulation than it is to believe in an unseen Supreme Being we call God. The commonality between both beliefs is what we call Faith. So, if we are robots, and God is an alien, what happens when we die? Perhaps our consciousness is loaded into another robot. But, if that were the case, wouldn't there be a lot of us running around with memories of past lives? Oh, wait, there are some people who say they are. While I love the concept of robots with human consciousness, I have enough trouble getting through the day already. Now, get back in the Matrix, and let me get to it.

 

Will The Sword Of Justice Become A Light Saber?

Robot Lawyers. While the use of a robot pretending to be a human lawyer is a catchy headline, the reality is that AI and robots are being used in law as deep analysis tools for data that is too big or complex for humans. Like vaccinations, AI is not 100% effective. But, when AI can predict legal results with greater than 90% accuracy, it is time to use it in situations that demand better decision making. Predicting the likely outcome of a proposed legal strategy, or assisting access to justice by creating legal pleadings from facts inserted into a computer by a lay person, and analysis of millions of data that is available in a dispute, are all likely uses. Robotics is just our way of making computer analysis human friendly. We like to see a human like figure. Unless, of course, the robot takes the form of an armed security bot that is roaming around shooting bullets.

Main Street Electrical Parade - Magic And Innocence And Everything Nice.

Before the Pandemic, before Disney became woke, before Disney was all about money, when DisneyWorld was new and there was only one park in Orlando, the Magic Kingdom, there was a magical night parade down Main Street that captivated everyone who experienced it. When it was ended in 2016, an enterprising photographer filmed the whole thing. I confess that watching this brought back so many memories that there was a tear in my eye. For a few minutes, all the troubles of the world melted away, and we forgot our tired bodies that had braved the Florida sun all day. The music had been chosen almost by accident, and the engineering skill was legendary. This is the perfect way to start a new week. Enjoy. 

Robotic Tech Can Change Museums And Other Tourism.

Meet Patrice, The Robot Introducing A New World To Homebound Kids. Robots that can be controlled remotely, and which have cameras and microphones, are enabling home bound children to visit museums. One of my favorite museums is the Spy Museum in Washington, D.C. I love the gadgets, and the history, and the opportunity to meet some of the people who have played a role in our history. Once, I spent an hour talking to Sandy Grimes, the author of "Circle of Treason", about the capturing of Aldrich Ames, the most notorious spy in U.S. history. While some in person contact has been prohibited for the past year, using robots to move around freely has increased in classrooms and museums and other places that are removed from access for some people, either through disability, or distance. Think of the possibilities for their use in litigation, as proxies for site visits to dangerous or inaccessible places. Think about lawyers using robots, rather than robotic lawyers. Think about augmenting human abilities by giving legs and mobility to the immobile. So, rather than welcoming a race of robotic future lords, let's use robotic tech for good.
