Link: Law.com - Cadwalader Laying Off 35 in Wake of Slumping Markets. This big law layoff illustrates another advantage of solo law practice. Regardless of what happens to the market or mortgages or whatever area of law I practice in, nobody is laying me off. As a solo, I am free to switch specialties, if I am willing to put in the time. At least, while I am doing it, I can practice law. Of course, if you are a big law layoff victim, why not use the opportunity to test the solo waters? You might be surprised what happens.

Are You kidding? The marketplace mess has affected the solo practitioner just as much as anyone working for a big firm. And whats worse is that there's no paycheck to rely on, no severence no 2-3 week notice!!! I am a solo working from home and it can be a scary thing. Maybe you have the time and income to educate yourseld and drum up another area of practice (along with the clientel to go with it) but it doesn't seem to be that easy.
